The Implications of the Gospel

By Bro. Ezekiel Asis

  • And the second part of this Epistles is about the practical implications of the Gospel, starting in Chapter 4
  • Prior to our texts, Paul condemns the sin of falsehood, illegitimate anger, and stealing

The Implication of the Gospel in our Speaking

[John Piper] – “The Greek word (sapros) is used in only one other context in the New Testament, namely, the places in Matthew and Luke where Jesus says, "It is not the good tree that bears bad fruit "(Luke 6:43; Matthew 7:17f.; Matthew 12:33). The term for "bad" fruit here is the same word for evil or unwholesome or corrupt in Ephesians 4:29—"Let no evil talk come out of your mouth!" The image in Paul's mind is probably one of rottenness and decay, something that is spoiled.”

POINT:

To mortify the sin of unwholesome talk is to cultivate your speech for the edification of others

  • The pattern of Mortification and Vivification is the emphasis of this text

Implications of rotten talk:

1. It Does Not Nourish

2. It Will Probably Make You Sick

3. It Probably Comes from a Diseased Tree, Matthew 15:11

CHALLENGE/GOSPEL CURE:

Let us show the implication of the Gospel in our speech

[Bryan Chapell] – “Christians are not allowed to say whatever we desire simply by rationalizing that we do not cuss or become coarse. We are not even allowed to fall back upon some category of neutrality in rationalizing what we say, as in “It doesn’t hurt anyone, so it’s all right to say.” The apostle’s standard is that if it does not build up and benefit, then it is not worthy to be said.”

The Implication of the Gospel in our Thinking and Acting

Note: Ipinapakita dito ni Pablo na ang pag-sunod natin sa Diyos ay sa awareness na ang Diyos ay banal, this verse is taken from Isaiah 63:10

  • “All” also modifies the other items in the list, telling readers to put away all wrath, anger, clamor, slander, and malice.
  • Bitterness is a primary characteristic of an unregenerate person (Romans 3:10-14)
Being kind, tenderhearted, and forgiving

POINT:

To put off all bitterness in our hearts is to put on the heart of Christ that is full of forgiveness

SIN TO MORTIFY:

Bitterness and Unforgiving heart

CHALLENGE:

Let us show The Implication of the Gospel in our Thinking and Acting by forgiving others

[Bryan Chapell] – “By forgiving we do become Christ to others. By bearing in our bodies the weight of unjust accusation, undeserved pain, and unretaliated harm, we are the Holy Spirit’s message of Jesus to others. By the practice of forgiveness we have the privilege of being a living witness to the One we most love, and who has loved us eternally and sacrificially. This is the ultimate motivation that gives us joy in our suffering, strength for obedience, and love for his commands. My life will never deserve his love, but my life can reflect his love; and because I love him, I will live for him in what I say and think and do.”
