Christ, the Source; the Church, the Means
Note: Sabi ng author sa v. 19, “Therefore” ito ay marks of transition, ibig sabihin ipinapakita dito ng author ano ang mga implications ng superiority ng Priesthood of Christ and the New Covenant in our lives.
- Kung ang mga ginagawa sa Lumang Tipan ay types and shadows lamang ng Heaven, in the New Covenant, tayo mismo ay nakakapasok sa trono ng biyaya ng Diyos through Christ.
- Hebrews 10:21, “and since we have a great priest over the house of God,”
- “The house of God” is the earthly realization of the heavenly temple of God, the church.
- [John Owen, An Exposition of the Epistle to the Hebrews Vol. IV: 508] – “The church here below is comprised in the first place; for
- unto them it is that this encouragement is given, unto whom this motive of drawing nigh is proposed, namely, as they have a high
- priest. And it is in the heavenly sanctuary wherein he administereth, or in the house of God above; into which also we do enter by our
- prayers and sacred worship; so is he for ever over his own house.”
Message: The heavenly and eternal High Priesthood of the Lord Jesus Christ is the foundation of the assurance of salvation and perseverance in the faith, and these blessings are experienced in the Church. Christ as the source of assurance and perseverance
Note: Malinaw sa verses 11-18, na mayroong tiyak na paglilinis sa Bagong Tipan hindi kagaya ng Lumang Tipan na provisionary atonement lamang ang ibinigay.
- At dahil dito, dahil si Hesu-Cristo ang unang nakapasok sa throne of Grace and God’s rest, we have confidence to the Holy Places through the death and resurrection of Christ (v. 19).
- The author makes a contrast in v. 20: if the Old Covenant was inaugurated through the blood of animals for their national and physical purification—limited to the land of Canaan—then Christ’s blood inaugurated a new and living way.
- “through the veil” – the veil of holy of holies, ininterpret ito ng author as typology of the body of Christ – “that is, His flesh”
- Some implications: while sinasabi natin that the Old Covenant is physical in nature and the New Covenant is spiritual in nature for our eternal salvation and assurance, we are not saying that the New Covenant is against the physical.
Point: The foundation of our assurance of salvation and perseverance in the faith is the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ and His ongoing intercession for us.
- John Calvin says, “The reason why God does not impute our sins to us is because he looks on Christ the Intercessor, and he sees there the marks of redemption — that for all for whom he died the price has been paid.”
[Sin to mortify] – Doubting our salvation.
The Church as the means of assurance and perseverance
Note: Ang word na “to stimulate” ay pwede itong i-translate as “to provoke” “to stir” “to irritate”, ang mga words na ito ay ginagamit natin kadalasan negatively (Acts 15:39)
- Pero ginagamit din ang strong word na ito as an earnest desire para sa good ng iba.. (Romans 11:14)
- This word is consistent with the author’s intention.
- We can discuss this later, kagaya ng namention ko sa Heb. 9:25 na ito ay pumapatungkol sa AD70, sa destruction of Jerusalem,
- ang “the day” dito pertains sa kanilang current circumstance.
- “Wherefore this day was no other but that fearful and tremendous day, a season for the destruction of Jerusalem, the temple, city,
- and nation of the Jews, which our Saviour had forewarned his disciples of, and which they had in continual expectation.” [John Owen]
Point: Although Jesus Christ is the foundation of salvation, the means and preservation of our salvation are through the Church, by the means of grace—fellowship in particular.
Theologically: Reformed Confessions confess that "there is no salvation outside the church"; as per WCF 25.2
[Sin to mortify] – Corporately, Mere formality in the church. We aim for excellent worship. We always discuss how to improve our liturgy, our hymn singing, and other technicalities like sound and ushering.
- While the highest mandate of the church is worship, the result of true communion with God through worship is warm fellowship with one another.
Gospel Cure/ Challenge: Come to the church even if your desire is small and clothed in weaknesses, for our Father in heaven is a merciful Father. Jesus Christ is our merciful High Priest. The Holy Spirit is our Comforter.
